Today together with other Heads of State and Government, retired
Presidents and other dignitaries, we joined Tanzanians in commemorating
the United Republic of Tanzania's Union Day. The ceremony marked the
Union between the mainland Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964. Tanzania has
been the envy of many nations for the unity and peace that prevails. I
share President Kikwete's view that if Tanganyika and Zanzibar succeeded
in merging to form a united republic, African unity is possible.
